About Punjabi University, Patiala

Punjabi University, Patiala, was established under the Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961 by the Punjab Assembly. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, on June 24, 1962. During the ceremony, he emphasized the role of higher education in nation-building, stating, “Our goal is a strong, free, and democratic India, where every citizen has equal opportunities for growth. Universities bear a significant responsibility in achieving this vision.” The university officially began its journey on April 30, 1962, in the historic princely state of Patiala, with the primary goal of promoting Punjabi language, art, and literature. Today, it stands as one of the largest universities in Punjab and is globally recognized as the second institution named after a language, following Hebrew University in Israel.
